#75 – You’re Not Alone

Artist – Saosin
Album – Saosin
Year – 2006
Genre – Emo/Post Hardcore

Saosin was one of those bands that doesn’t last as long as you want them to, but you’re glad for the music they put out in their short life span, at least for me. The emo outfit, led first by Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green and then by Cove Reber, is a powerhouse of a band that had a lot of talent behind them. “You’re Not Alone” is one of those songs that just grabs you and doesn’t let go, and I suppose judging by the subject matter of the song, that’s a good thing.

The song really gets it’s emotional gravity and power from two things: the guitar layers and Reber’s powerful, yet sensitive voice. Right from the beginning of the song, the guitars overlay to create this really cool, dreamlike pattern. When Reber starts singing, you can hear the honesty and simplicity in his voice, yet his talent is evident. He is a very, very good singer. He keeps you entranced with the way he dances around each note and puts his heart into what he’s singing about.

You’re not alone
There is more to this, I know
You can make it out
You will live to tell

These are the words of the chorus, and yet another example of the power of simplicity. Whereas the verses really probe into the search for individual self and introspection, the chorus succeeds in it’s wide, sweeping exclamation that you are never alone when you truly feel you are. There is always love if you know where to find it, and no matter what you are going through, you can make it out on the other side a stronger and better person. Reber’s voice soars and the melody is absolutely chill inducing. It’s simply a gorgeous and uplifting chorus, accentuated by the band’s overwhelming talent with their instruments.

The guitar solo is another highlight of this song. It echoes for all to hear, and seems to resonate everywhere at once. Again, it’s a simple melody, but it sticks with you. When the harmonies come in, you’ll get goosebumps. At this point, all instruments except piano drop out and Reber shows his chops again. It’s here that I fully grasped the beauty of the song; when it is at its most stripped down. The final choruses are breathtaking and disarming, and I was very moved by the song by the time it was over.

Saosin is a talented group, and I really hope they reform at some point. The musicians are all incredibly talented, with drums and guitar being at the forefront. Although Cove Reber is no longer a part of the band, “You’re Not Alone” is a perfect example of why he was an asset for the short time he was lead singer. This is a beautifully constructed song with a beautiful message, and I encourage everyone to give it a listen at least once.
